Otaru Art Base – Experience Art in Historic Buildings

Otaru Art Base is a cultural complex that utilizes historic buildings from Otaru, once a major gateway for maritime trade and a center of Hokkaido’s economic development. Today, it consists of five museums housed in preserved early 20th-century structures such as former banks, trading companies, and warehouses. Visitors can enjoy a wide range of artworks and crafts from Japan and abroad. The Nitori Museum of Art showcases Japanese paintings, Western-style paintings, sculptures, and glass art, while the Western Art Museum features works by artists such as Renoir. The Stained Glass Museum offers a magical atmosphere with beautiful stained glass originally used in British churches. The historic architecture itself, including the former Mitsui Bank Otaru Branch, is also a highlight. It is a unique destination where you can experience both the history and art culture of Otaru.
